Thomas E. Stevens is an Eastern Kentucky mediator based in Richmond. He is a licensed attorney (KY) and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Government and Paralegal Program at Eastern Kentucky University.
As a longtime trial and appellate attorney, Thomas has experience litigating and trying civil cases in state and federal courts across the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
Thomas also serves as a Louisville mediator, where he practiced law for many years. Thomas was previously a partner at a well-respected civil litigation firm in Louisville. He practiced in the areas of general tort liability, trucking and motor vehicle liability, products liability, premises liability, retailer liability, uninsured and underinsured motorist liability, and catastrophic injury claims (e.g., wrongful death, disfigurement, traumatic brain injury).
As a professor, Thomas teaches undergraduate students who plan to pursue careers as paralegals, lawyers, or other legal professionals. He researches mediation and alternative dispute resolution, including multi-party negotiation and best practices for resolution of civil claims.
Thomas relies on his experience as a litigator and educator to offer in-person Kentucky mediation and virtual mediation services.
Thomas E. Stevens - Eastern Kentucky Mediator. Thomas is a graduate of Northwestern University's Mediation Skills Training Program. He uses those skills, conflict resolution best practices from academic research, and boots-on-the-ground litigation experience to assist parties during negotiation and help them craft dynamic and workable settlements during Kentucky mediations.
Thomas facilitates negotiation that empowers each party to recognize and meet their respective needs and interests. By evaluating their underlying interests, available options to meet those interests, and the best alternatives to negotiated settlement, the parties are well-equipped to negotiate toward a fair and satisfactory resolution.
Thomas draws inspiration from scripture to resolve disputes and reconcile differences. When we face conflict and adversity, we recognize our need for a mediator, someone outside of the conflict who can bring us together. Job 9:33. Thomas views his work as a mediator as a ministry of reconciliation.
2 Corinthians 5:18-19. He helps people achieve peace by working to find common ground and reconcile their differences.
Thomas believes that each party to a conflict deserves to be heard. He listens to and empathizes with each person but challenges all parties to realistically evaluate their situation and work toward a wise agreement.
Thomas is available to host or travel to mediation conferences around the Commonwealth from Pikeville to Paducah, Hazard to Hopkinsville, London to Lexington, Florence to Frankfort, Middlesboro to Morehead, Barbourville to Bardstown - wherever he is needed to offer Kentucky mediation services. This includes virtual mediation services.
